Why am I in College? College was a big goal that I have had since I started school. I was always pressured to go to college by my parents and by myself. Not only would I be the first child out of my brother and sister to go to college, but I would be the first out of my whole family to go. I have always had certain goals for my life since I was a child. One was to be a computer animator, and the other was to be an architect or mechanical engineer. Right now I’ve decided to go with being a mechanical engineer. Being a mechanical engineer has many benefits. One being that it has a lot to do with design. I’ve been an avid artist since the age of four. Design has been a big part of my life. I have become an excellent artist since then. I’m able to copy a picture or design perfectly if not better. I’ve always thought that the best job to have is a job that makes you want to go to work. Doing something like this would enable me to work on something and no that I would enjoy it. I also would like to be able to help my community. I would like to help design new ways to get construction done quicker and faster. I would also like to design better technology to keep our community in the best shape as possible. It could be new garbage trucks or new street sweepers. I think that our community needs some new technology to help out the hard working people of this community. Furthermore, I am in college to make my family proud. I would like to lead an example for the generation beneath me. I would like more of my family to know that they too can go to college. However, not everyone advocated this treaty. There were many factors that were debated during the ratification of the Treaty of Paris. Hoar stated When you raise the flag over the Philippine Islands as an emblem of dominion and acquisition, you take it down from Independence Hall The power to conquer alien peoples and hold them in subjection is nowhere expressly granted (Doc. F). Hoar, like many others, did not ee the profits of annexing these countries, and thought the government was stretching the limits on their expressed powers. These views were headed by the Anti-lmperialist League, which was centered in New England. They were weakened primarily because they lacked a coherent program. Some called for annexation of Puerto Rico and Hawaii, but not the Philippines. Some wanted to use them as naval bases, and some wanted nothing to do with any of these countries. This was the primary opposition to the Treaty of Paris. With all of this opposition, McKinley tried to rally for ratification. He began touring the South and consulted closely with the senators. Many people were appalled at how McKinley and other members of working this treaty through the senate but all the railroad influence, which is being worked through Elks, all the commercial interest which can be reached are bringing pressure on Senators in the most shameful manner (Doc. L). This quote from Senator Arthur P. Gorman shows how there were many outside influences on the voting. People were also not voting with their beliefs, they were voting with their pocketbooks. Arthur P. Dunn discovered that people were being bribed into voting or the legislation. McEnery was promised the appointment of US Judge of his choice, McLaurin was won over by being allowed to name postmasters in the state, Kennet was squeezed by some sort of court proceeding in his state and had to vote for the treaty (Doc. Q). These acts eventually led to the ratification of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty of Paris was not popular with some people in the country. Comparing a painting by Fra Filippo Lippi and Dante Gabriel Rossetti The two pictures are Rosetti’s Ecce Ancilla Domini and Lippi’s Annunciation. Both of the artists were influenced by their age. Lippi lived in Italy between 1406 and 1469 and Rosetti from 1828 to 1882. Lippi’s background of Italian Renaissance determined his style to a large extent. In Florence where Lippi lived the economic changes of the time led to an emerging new class: that of the banker princes. They lent money to almost all the kings in western Europe and so they collected great fortunes. From their riches they could give patronage to all kinds of artists. This gave artists a stable living but did not give them the freedom that Rosetti enjoyed a few centuries later. Rosetti lived in England at a time when power came to the hands of a new industrial middle class who became the new patrons of the arts. They were rich but not as rich as the church or the patrons of Lippi’s time. Therefore, the artists could not enjoy the protection of this new class for years. Consequently, an artist had to sell pictures in open competition with his rivals on the walls of a salon or an Academy. This competition naturally led to a variety of styles. Some turned to history or exotic arts and others sought new ideas. One of such artists was Dante Gabriel Rosetti he turned against the neo-classical traditions of the Academy and looked for different inspiration. He wrote in 1901 that "an artist, whether painter or writer, ought to be bent upon defining and expressing his own personal thoughts, and that they ought to be based upon a direct study of Nature, and harmonised with her manifestations." In the same year he founded with some fellow artists the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood based on the same principles. These ideas were not welcome by the public and Ecce Ancilla Domini one of Rosetti’s first paintings was severely abused. Rosetti was so offended by the criticism that he swore never to exhibit in public again. Rosetti’s age did not appreciate his art because they thought that the style Raphael established was the crowning of all paintings. This style was based on dark colours, artificial settings and a triangle composition. Rosetti wanted to free ... ...we cannot see where the wall ends and the floor starts. With this we can draw a parallel with Lippi’s painting where architecture was also illogical. This brought us to the elements that connect Rosetti’s painting to a traditional one like Lippi’s. Although the colouring is mostly white the picture is patched with some gold, red and blue, the traditional colours of Mary’s virginity. Also, the lily is present in both paintings, again it is related to virginity and the dove too appears, which represents the Holy Spirit. All these differences and similarities could be related to the problems Rosetti had to face when painting a religious picture. Probably he wanted to be realistic as much as possible and at the same time following his ambition he wanted to express his thoughts as well. This could be achieved by mixing traditional elements with innovations. One such new element was covering the figures with simple white dresses. Probably Rosetti did not dress his figures in contemporary clothes because that would have been strange to the Victorian viewer. Painting the figures in white was a solution to this problem. This way managing to be realistic and contemporary at the same time.

It’s All About the Law †English Language Learners Essay

Are English language learners a new population? Researchers would like us to believe so but the reality is that they are actually a complex group of students, full of diversity in their educational needs, backgrounds, languages, and goals, who have been coming to the United States for years. An English language learner is a person that is from another culture that has come to the United States to live, learn, become educated and find a career. The United States is known as the melting pot of the world and we will continue to have people of other cultures coming to our country. Most of these immigrants speak different languages. You can walk down the street of most U. S cities and hear Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish and other languages. Laws today provide all students in the United States equal access to a quality education no matter what their culture or background may be. Voter driven initiatives and laws have brought about many changes in education in our schools today in regards to our English language learners and how they are taught and expected to learn. Over the last 40 years we have seen legislative decisions that have shaped education in the United States. In just the last 15 years the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Oregon have debated and asked their voters to make decisions regarding the education of ELLs (Mora, 2009). The states of California (1998), Arizona (2000) and Massachusetts (2002) have actually passed laws for English language learners to be put in programs called Structured English Immersion (SEI). Colorado (2002) and Oregon (2008) rejected initiatives on their ballots. (Mora, 2009). The voters in these states were against the dismissal of bilingual education. So what did these three states do for their ELLs? California was the leader of the pack. Their initiative, led by English for the Children, advocated that English learners be taught only in English. Their opposition argued that bilingual children could not learn English as well as other subjects such as Science, Math and Social Studies without the use of bilingual education. The voters of California decided that the English for the Children group was correct in saying that students would learn best by being immersed in English Instruction (GCU, n. ) and so SEI (Structured English Immersion) was born. Arizona was next to follow in the path of California but with their initiatives allowed for even less opportunity for bilingual programs. Arizona’s English-only initiative, Proposition 203 (2000), arrived in the midst of a lawsuit in Nogales, AZ. The Flores family was suing the state of Arizona for not providing adequate learning opportunities for their children (Flores v. Arizona , 2000). (GCU, n. d). The passing of Proposition 203 and the eventual decision to the Flores v. Arizona case led to Arizona requiring that all current certified personnel had to acquire an SEI endorsement by August 2009 in order to keep their certification. Arizona Proposition 203 along with California Proposition 227 restricted the access of bilingual education to language-minority students (Mora, 2002). When Massachusetts followed in 2002, Structured English Immersion was alive and well across the country in California and Arizona. The English for Children group had no trouble convincing the voters of Massachusetts to pass their own SEI initiative. GCU, n. d. ) What all of these initiatives and laws did was require schools to teach their ELL students only in English by following a SEI plan. When the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act came about in 2001 they too looked at ELL students and chose to remove the word bilingual from their policies and make schools accountable for showing adequate progress from all of their students in the English language. Have we solved the issues of students from other cultures who are learning English? Have we made teaching ELLs easier for our schools and teachers? These are questions I feel we will be asking for years to come. As people continue to migrate into our country we will focus on educating their children so they can be successful in the United States. As educators we will use all the resources we have to help and guide them in learning the English language. We will strive for them to be successful as dictated by the policies of NCLB. Will we, as educators, be successful? With some students we will, and with others we will not. But this would be the case with any student no matter their culture or background. History shows that we will even have American children who will not be successful no matter what we do and others that will rise to the top to be great leaders. Initiatives and laws don’t make better teachers, they don’t make better students, they don’t make better schools but they do establish guidelines so that each child is receiving an equal opportunity. In the United States we will continue to provide all of our students an equal education.

Erin Brockovich Blog Essay

In the film, we see that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) had known for several years about the water contamination problems that existed near their plants in California. PG&E is trying quietly to buy land that was contaminated by hexavalent chromium, a deadly toxic waste that the company is improperly and illegally dumping and, in turn, poisoning the residents in the area. This fact becomes apparent when a newly hired file clerk, Erin Brockovich, runs across some files on a pro bono case involving medical records in real-estate files and PG&E offering to acquire the home of Hinkley, California, resident Donna Jensen. It can be seen here that PG&E engaged in a crime. This white collar deviance involved the type called physical harm and moral harm. Erin Brockovich: Oh see, now that pisses me off. First of all, since the demur we have more than 400 plaintiffs and†¦ let’s be honest, we all know there are more out there. They may not be the most sophisticated people but they do know how to divide and $20 million isn’t *shit* when you split it between them. Second of all, these people don’t dream about being rich. They dream about being able to watch their kids swim in a pool without worrying that they’ll have to have a hysterectomy at the age of *twenty*. Like Rosa Diaz, a client of ours. Or have their spine deteriorate, like Stan Blume, *another* client of ours. So before you come back here with another lame ass offer, I want you to think real hard about what your spine is worth, Mr. Walker. Or what you might expect someone to pay you for your uterus, Ms. Sanchez. Then you take out your calculator and you multiply that number by a hundred. Anything less than that is a waste of our time. In this scene PG&E attorneys are trying to settle the lawsuit with a mediocre offer that Erin finds unacceptable. The case had changed to a binding arbitration. Therefore no jury would be present and a judge would make the final decision. This type of litigation was classified as a tort case.

Because of his oppressive rule, the people asked for help from the gods since they feared that someday Gilgamesh would ask for a greater part of his divine heritage, challenge the gods and even rock the pillars of heaven if he was not controlled. Therefore, to counter the threat, the gods devised a plan of creating Enkidu, who was the mirror image of Gilgamesh. This is the meaning† (Lawall, 15). The first dream in the story predicts the coming together of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. This sets up the theme of the story by demonstrating their eternal friendship. This dream introduces the important idea of the solidarity between the two men and helps to develop the plo t of the story since subsequent events in the story is based on this newly found friendship. Gilgamesh then tells his mother about the second dream. He said, â€Å"I saw it (the axe) and was glad. I bent down, deeply drawn towards it; I loved it like a woman and wore it at my side† (Lawall, 15). His mother explained that it was not an axe: â€Å"That axe, which you saw†¦that is the comrade whom I give you†¦he is the brave companion who rescues his friend† (Lawall, 15). She explained that Gilgamesh would not succeed in overpowering Enkidu; however, ultimately they would associate with one another intimately and conquer their enemies with ease. This shows that dreams are mantic, that is, able to foretell the future. On the other hand, the interpretation given to Gilgamesh also anticipates a contemporary approach. Implying a sense of fear and uncertainty, he states, â€Å"I seized hold of a wild bull in the wilderness. It bellowed and beat up the dust till the whole sky was dark, my arm was seized† (Lawall, 21). This seems to imply an anticipation of a fight that they were about to encounter. In the same way, in his other dream, Gilgamesh recounts, â€Å"I dreamed again. We stood in a deep gorge of the mountain†¦ and suddenly the mountain fell, it struck me and caught my feet from under me† (Lawall, 21). In giving the interpretation, Enkidu appears to verify that they would not match up the strength of the gigantic Humbaba when he says that the mountain that he saw is the terrifying demon.
